Follow the Money
Follow the Money
When the numbers don’t make sense, you don’t have to guess.
I’ve spent my career investigating financial crimes and tracing money through bank accounts, businesses, tax returns and financial records. Now I’m teaching you how to do it.
What you’ll find here
Every answer starts with a question.
Ask the question.
What doesn’t make sense?
Get the records.
Don’t guess. Find the documents that can answer the question.
Follow the money.
Trace the transactions, test the explanation and keep following the evidence.
Get the answer.
Because eventually, the numbers have to make sense.
What to expect
A new Follow the Money post every Tuesday. Short explanations. Real questions. Case studies. Financial mysteries. Stories from investigations.
Bring me the question. I’ll show you how I would think about it as an investigator, what record might answer it, what that record can and can’t tell us, and what question I’d ask next.
Some lessons use hypothetical cases. Others use anonymized or appropriately modified examples, or stories from my years as a federal agent. You don’t need to know forensic accounting to start.
